Grade 1 Reading Homework

We have begun the Read Well reading program.  It has a take home component. We read it in class, then the students are to read it to an older person. That person signs their name under to student's name that they listened to and helped do the assignment. I should be returned the next school day.
Sometimes there may also be something to do or finish from one of the other subjects.

We will begin the Houghton Mifflin series of  readers this week also. Keep in mind the first months always review Kdg., so the work should be fairly easy.
Printing is of utmost importance to me. We will practice letter formation every morning. Once the students have a better understanding of the use of lines and spaces and make the letters correctly, we will add sentences to our work. This is called DOL or Daily Oral Language. It is here we will also practice spelling, using the short and long vowels, a,e,i,o,u and sometimes y, plus other vowel patterns and blends.
Look for a lot of information handed out on Curriculum Night, Thursday, September 13th. I look forward to seeing and meeting you then. At that time I will ask for a volunteer to be my room parent, ask for some signup for our auction project, sign up for times for the Halloween Carnival cake walk on the stage and your emails so we can get in touch with each other as needed.

Grade 2 Reading Homework

Reading Homework -
Second graders are to read every night per Ms Finneys schedule.
SPELLING: I will not be starting out with the paragraph format for spelling right away. I will instead be reviewing the formation of letters, use of lines and spaces so the students can print the paragraph properly.
We will also practice writing on binder paper, how to write smaller and skip lines. They need this skill to answers the reading comprehension questions with ease.
I will then begin reviewing the vowel patterns with words put into sentences. This reinforces our DOL work we did last year.
Eventually the Spelling test on Fridays will be these sentences. Points are given for spelling as well as correct punctuation and use of capital letters for proper nouns.

READING:
We started the first story, My First American Friend last week. I am helping them answer the comprehension questions so they know how to find the answers in the story and how to follow directions. They are to answer the questions in complete sentences.
Seatwork will also include spelling and grammar assignments.
I have tubs of chapter books and books by famous authors the students are welcome to read when they are finished with their seatwork. Computers will also be available shortly.

Book It will begin in Oct. Ms Finney will set the time schedule for this program. I expect everyone to participate to broaden their vocabulary and fluency in reading.
